I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself and provide an opportunity for you all to ask me questions! My name is Laurie Smith and I’m the Agency Owner of Garden Island Insurance Agency! We are an Independent Insurance Agency, which means that we work for our clients, and not any one specific Insurance Company. We find the insurance that is going to suit your needs best and act with a fiduciary responsibility to work hard for you! What this ultimately translates into, is that we help save you money and provide you with the coverage that will best protect you.
I”m just your typical island girl. I was born on Oahu, but lived both on Oahu and Kauai growing up! I attended Kekaha Elementary, Aloha Christian and Kauai High/Intermediate. My fondest childhood memory is growing up climbing coconut trees and making forts in the Kiawe bushes. I guess you can say I was bit of a tomboy growing up! Or for those that are from here, you’ll understand “I was just a typical lil titah!” My family permanently moved away from Kauai when I was in the 5th grade, but my grandparents lived right here in Hanamaulu so my sister and I would come to visit frequently and also came to stay a few years during intermediate/high school time, when my father Ernest Mande was diagnosed and later passed from cancer.
I am married with three children, Kalani (24), Rebecca (21), and Jacob (17). My husband is Dwight Smith. Some of you may know him as the “Mechanic” and owner of MarineSmith Boat Repair. We live in Hanamaulu with our three dogs and cat. We’re members of New Hope Lihue and are follower’s of Christ. My hobbies include: sewing, crocheting, animal rescue and attending Toastmasters meetings!
So you you may be asking, well how did I get started with this? What are my qualifications? Well, I started in the Insurance and Financial Services industry back in 2000 working for a San Diego based Financial Planner that specialized in working with high net worth clients, many of whom were former San Diego Chargers! I learned so much in working as the Underwriting Assistant and it was then that I knew that eventually THIS would be my long term goal. I received my Securities License (license to sell Stocks and Bonds) in 2004 and then my Life Insurance License in 2005. I worked for various companies in various positions around San Diego County learning all about insurance and what it took to manage assets, grow a book of business, and of course sell insurance. Eventually, I became a Branch Manager or OSJ (Office of Supervisory Jurisdiction) for about 35 Registered Representatives all over Southern California. In this role, I would make calls out the different offices, conducting audits, and making sure that if FINRA (Formerly the NASD) came in to audit these offices that the Representatives were doing everything within the NASD stadards. I think that position is where I really learned the true value of fiduciary responsibility. Because really, if an Agent or Representative was acting on behalf of the client, then as their compliance officer, I never had to worry about them getting into trouble.
So now’s the time to ask away! What would you like to know about me, my experience, the agency, my pets? Post your questions below in the comments!
